Danger: the world’s most dangerous insect has emerged

In recent years, the United States has been faced with an alarming and deadly threat in the form of the giant killer wasp, aptly nicknamed the “killer hornet”. This invasive and highly destructive insect, considered the largest and most dangerous of its kind in the world, made its appearance in the country in 2019 and has continued to spread fear and mayhem. The last sighting of this menacing creature was in the state of Washington in 2021. The discovery sent shockwaves through the region, as this “killer hornet” showed its aggressiveness by attacking everything in its path. Measuring 4.4 centimetres in length, the insect was detected on 11 August, just 3.2 kilometres from where it was initially identified. The danger is all the greater because the venom from a single bite can kill a human being.
Faced with this alarming situation, the WSDA is taking steps to combat the threat. Live traps are being set up in the area and entomologists plan to mark the captured wasps to return them to their nests. The proximity of this sighting to the US-Canadian border has also prompted authorities in the region to set more traps to prevent the spread of these deadly insects.
