It’s always exciting to find something interesting on the beach, but most people don’t expect to find an antique more than a century old.
One person on social media thinks they’ve found the oldest message ever found in a bottle.
The user @asmythco shared her discovery with her followers on TikTok and expressed amazement at her good fortune.
She said: ‘I found a message in a bottle on the beach on July 3. The note inside said yacht Neptune off Atlantic City New Jersey, August 6-76.’
The outside of the bottle read ‘Barr and Brother Philadelphia’.
Although the bottle dates from August 1976, it can’t be the oldest, you think.

By examining the bottle, he was able to determine its age and period of use.
He then pointed to the date and commented: ‘Look at it’, indicating that the bottle was probably made before 1900. This indicates that the communication was probably sent in 1876 and not 1976.
He concluded the video by saying: ‘This makes it the oldest message in a bottle ever found’.
