Gary Burghoff, aka Radar in “M*A*S*H”, always kept his left hand out of sight

The 1972 hit sitcom “M*A*S*H” introduced the world to a series of memorable and beloved characters, from the tough-talking but compassionate Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce to his endearing friend Captain B.J. Hunnicutt. Almost all the characters remained in the minds of fans. One character who appeared often, but was easily ignored by his military counterparts due to his nervous disposition, was the company clerk of the 4077th MASH unit, Corporal Walter Eugene “Radar” O’Reilly. While much of the base staff tended to take Radar’s efforts for granted, the fans took notice. They all saw Burghoff as a lovable, small and shy character, having known him on screen and stage for many years.
Fortunately for all his fans, Burghoff didn’t let his disability stand in his way and pursued his dream of becoming an actor.Despite his doubts about how others perceived him, his fellow actors adored him. Director Charles Dubin recalled working with Burghoff before he left “M*A*S*H” and remarked how attentive and pleasant Burghoff was with everyone on set. However, Burghoff had another aspect that dented his self-esteem.
