You’ve probably seen stickers on bananas before. But have you ever wondered what they mean?
1) A 4-digit code starting with 3 or 4 means that the product has been grown according to the principle of intensive agriculture, which also involves the use of fertilizers and pesticides.
2) If the product has a 5-digit code starting with 9, this means that it has been grown conventionally, as has been the case for thousands of years. Today, this method is called “organic”, i.e. without pesticides or fertilizers.
3 If a product bears a 5-digit code starting with the number 8, it is genetically modified, or commonly known as GMO.
