A pretty decoration often found above a barn door is a barn star.
They can be painted or made from metal stars. Sometimes they’re replaced by hexagonal signs or quilt blocks.
These objects have a purpose, and it’s probably not the one you thought.
It turns out that German-American farmers consider barn stars to be very important.
They are placed at the top of barns to ward off evil spirits or to help the farmer achieve good harvests.
Interestingly, each star can be a different color and have a different meaning.
For example, a green star means that crops will grow well and be fertile. Blue or black stars mean that the farmer, his family and possessions are safe.
Brown stars, on the other hand, mean friendship. The history of barn stars is interesting.
