X Factor UK contestant Gamu Nhengu captures Simon Cowell’s attention and breathes new life into a song created before she was born, all in three minutes.
Nhengu is 18 years old and, when asked why she became a singer, she replies that she wants to be somebody and achieve something that people will remember. She speaks with confidence and conviction, and doesn’t seem nervous in front of the four judges.
Nhengu chose the song “Walking on Sunshine”. It’s by Katrina and the Waves, a new wave band from the 1980s.
Although Katrina and the Waves are not a successful band, they are best known for a single from 1985. Walking on Sunshine” is a mainstay of eighties nostalgia films.
In his introduction, Nhengu explains to the judges that he has modified his song. He doesn’t specify what he’s changed, whether it’s the lyrics or the arrangements, so the audience and judges are naturally intrigued. Nhengu doesn’t disappoint once he’s finished the introductions and starts singing.
While the other three judges smile, Simon Cowell looks as if he’s skipped breakfast and has an upset stomach. “I can’t wait to see what you’ve done with this song,” says Simon in response to Nhengu’s assertion that he’s changed his music.
