Oscar-winning actor Brad Pitt claims to suffer from a rare condition that prevents him from identifying faces.
In a recent interview with GQ, Brad Pitt hinted that he may be suffering from prosopagnosia, a neurological disorder that prevents him from recognizing faces.
“Nobody believes me,” said Pitt, 58, who has not been officially diagnosed. “I want to meet another [sufferer].”
Mr. Pitt explained that he spends a lot of time at home because of his illness.
People with this disorder may have difficulty differentiating between members of their own family or identifying themselves in photographs. They also have difficulty recognizing people outside their usual environment, for example when meeting a colleague in the supermarket.
Degenerative forms of prosopagnosia have been linked to diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Galvin said in a university press release.
Lesions of the fusiform gyrus, a brain region important for high-level visual interpretation, including identification of faces and objects, can occur during pregnancy or shortly after birth, leading to the disorder.
