Discovery of large Asian hornets’ nest in abandoned house prompts new warnings

Earlier this month a large nest of Asian hornets was discovered in an abandoned house in St Brelades, a picturesque Channel Island town in the UK.The discovery caused concern among residents and scientists alike, as the Asian hornet is considered an invasive species in several parts of the world, including the UK. Authorities are now appealing to the public to be wary of these hornets and their nets, both for their personal safety and to prevent the species from invading the UK.
The Asian hornet, known scientifically as Vespa velutina nigrithorax, is native to Southeast Asia. In recent years it has become a growing problem in many parts of the world. This species is considered invasive because of its ability to displace local hornet populations and wreak havoc on ecosystems. They are known to prey on bees, posing a significant threat to honeybee populations and the pollination services they provide.
