It was supposed to be a fun day for Albie, a four-year-old from Warwickshire, UK. He had just been given a strawberry ice cream during a visit to the local bowling alley.
Little did his parents, Beth Green and Fred Pegg, know that this treat would soon turn into a nightmare.
As Albie and her friend enjoyed their ice cream, all seemed well. But an hour later, Albie’s behavior changed dramatically. Beth recalls that her son went from “happy to restless and tired in the blink of an eye”.
They took him to hospital because Albie had lost consciousness.
The journey to the hospital was a blur for Beth and Fred, who witnessed their son’s worsening condition. The medical staff struggled to stabilize Albie as his heartbeat became weaker and weaker. Beth described these moments as agonizing as they waited, praying for Albie’s recovery.
After three long days in hospital, Albie improved.
Glycerol, an ingredient commonly used in soft drinks in the UK, poses significant risks to young children.
Because the drink is so widespread and readily available, excessive consumption can occur, leading to serious symptoms such as shock, hypoglycemia and loss of conscious.
