The Library of Congress named her a “Living Legend” in 2004 for her enrichment of America’s cultural heritage. In 2005, she received the U.S. government’s National Medal of Arts and, in 2006, was honored at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., for her lifetime artistic achievements.
