Around one billion people worldwide live with a disability. In other countries, disabled children are treated like “monsters”, deprived of the chance to go to school, abandoned in insalubrious institutions and subjected to cruel punishments.
This is the case of Rustam, who had several health problems that affected his appearance and led his biological parents to abandon him when he was just a newborn. Just before entering a “home for the disabled”, the little boy experienced a great miracle.
Before 2006, there was no system in place to protect the disabled. That year, the United Nations created an international treaty which, for the first time, protected disabled children who were abused, neglected or imprisoned in certain countries. One of the children left in hospital shortly after birth because of his appearance was called Rustam.
Her first encounter with the child was better than expected. “Nika describes her son as “broad-minded and open, sometimes coming to contradictory conclusions”, so it was easy for her to encourage him to explore new things. Sadly, Nika’s Instagram account has since been deleted, so we can no longer follow Rustam’s amazing hair and wild dance moves.
