A mother who battled infertility shares her rollercoaster story

Close to one in five couples will experience difficulty conceiving at some point in their lives. For many, it’s an extremely tough and stressful period, but as others will testify, patience and determination can bear fruit. Desiree and Ryan Fortin patiently waited for many years before finally turning to in vitro fertilization. They prayed to God to help them conceive. Shortly after the IVF treatment, they finally received the news that Desiree was pregnant. But the couple could never have prepared for what was in store. College sweethearts, Desiree and Ryan Fortin, have been married since 2009, but something wasn’t quite right: they had long struggled to conceive. Doctors diagnosed Desiree with polycystic ovary syndrome, hypothyroidism, and low progesterone levels. She and her husband tried for three long and painful years before finally resorting to IVF. But instead of getting positive pregnancy tests, Desiree got her period over and over again. It was mentally exhausting. “It wasn’t just that I couldn’t get pregnant,” she writes about those tough years. “Infertility brought me more tears than I ever thought I could shed… I would lie on the floor of my bathroom in total emptiness after countless negative pregnancy tests time and time again. I had to endure injections, bruises, and all kinds of medications because when you’re infertile and seek fertility treatment for help, that’s what awaits you. It’s expensive and exhausting physically, emotionally, and mentally.” And when they saw the ultrasound, they couldn’t believe there weren’t just one, but three babies growing! It turned out the couple was expecting triplets, what a success! But the struggle wasn’t over for Desiree and her family.
