The woman seemed to be dealing with many intense issues that made her unable to be a mother. This was something Ruben discovered much later, once she was already well into her pregnancy. And all of this was unexpected. There was only one thing he could do. Ruben discussed the situation with friends and family and eventually came to the conclusion that he wanted to raise the child alone. Single parenting is not a rare concept, but it is usually the mother who takes on the task.
