Everyone agrees that working as a firefighter is a serious and important job. The photo posted by firefighter Pedro Bras clearly showed how seriously firefighters take their missions.
There is a great need for firefighters in the region of Portugal, which is fighting a forest fire. 1,150 firefighters are currently working day and night to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading. 25 people have been injured this year due to the fire, in addition to numerous damages in various regions. Two catastrophic fires that struck Portugal in June and October of the previous year caused a total of 114 deaths. This image depicted firefighters who, although tired from their brave efforts, continued to work in dangerous conditions. Pedro sent a photo of some firefighters who wanted to take a break and relax after spending many hours extinguishing a large fire in Pedróg Grande. “After working hard all day and all night, we decided to take a break and relax by the river for about fifteen minutes; at that moment, we noticed that the air was thick with smoke.”
According to Pedro, firefighters took a brief 25-minute break to relax by a river after working tirelessly for 24 hours. He said the firefighters took a break at that time. The photo vividly showed the smoke-filled environment. The temperature reached a record level of approximately 116 degrees Fahrenheit on August 5th. In addition to the 13 aircraft that dropped water on the fire, several additional firefighters also volunteered to help fight the forest fire. AWM states that 160 soldiers were called in to assist in evacuation efforts.
The photograph generated over 9,000 user responses, 1,300 comments, and more than 5,900 shares before quickly going viral. Many people expressed their surprise at the firefighters’ efforts. Manja Knofel stated that every firefighter in the world is a hero in their own way. Another user from Paris named Sweetie Racch said they deserved “rest and praise” for the exceptional work they had done. The firefighters did their best, according to Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa. Several of them suffered mortal injuries. The police hoped that the event from the previous year would not be repeated this year.
