Named after the main dragon in The Hobbit, Smaug, these spiky lizards look like miniature dragons.
This armored reptile is the largest of a group called “frowning lizards” and, like any good dragon, the species has many names.
Despite having quite effective armor and a unique subway lifestyle, Smaug giganteus is not sufficiently protected from the roads and farms that have carved up the territory. 
Nearly 1,200 giant moles have been exported under permit in the past three decades, but it is not known exactly how many have crossed borders illegally.
