A video from Syria shows the incredible moment a group of men, hands free in the rubble, rescue a young girl as her father tries to reassure her.
The father can be heard shouting to his daughter Nour: “Daddy is here, don’t be afraid,” as the rescue team digs under huge boulders to reach her.
In the rebel-held village of Jinderis, north of Aleppo, her father saw her rising from the mound, her face smeared with dust.
Nearly 24 hours after the quake, other footage showed that two more young children had been rescued from the rubble.
Overnight, they rescued a toddler and his mother, who had been buried under the rubble for more than 20 hours.
Other rescuers from Sarmada, in north-western Syria, took the dust-covered boy to care for him.
Because of the war, the family had already been uprooted in their own country.
It was in the town of Qatma, north of Aleppo, that a second child, Ahmed, was rescued.
The authorities later declared that the 7.5 magnitude quake that struck on Monday afternoon was “not an aftershock”.
Thousands of people have died in Turkey and Syria, and many more are believed to be buried alive under ruined structures.
