Scientists claim that the chances of finding strange life are much higher in the depths of the sea than in the cold outer space. Right here, within our reach, there is a whole unexplored world that will remain inaccessible for many decades, even with future technology.
But sometimes, as noted by Lemurov.net, nature itself comes close to humans; recently, two diving friends had the chance to encounter such a “wonder. It resembles characters from old movies about aliens, but it has a terrestrial origin. And yes, it’s not a simple plastic bag, but a living being. It was at least 8 meters long, but it’s hard to say precisely because at some point the creature began to change shape whimsically, almost turning inside out!
Amateur divers Steve Hathaway and Andrew Battle found this strange creature while diving near the underwater volcano at White Island, about fifty kilometers from New Zealand. Here, the waters are warm and shallow, teeming with marine life, so they weren’t very surprised to encounter it, especially because they knew what it was. This “worm” is called Pyrosoma, and upon close inspection, it’s composed of millions of small organisms intertwining into a single colony to facilitate food gathering.
Pyrosoma is not a rare species, but few divers can say they’ve touched it. Encountering such giants is indeed uncommon. They pose no threat to humans, but observing them is incredibly interesting, as this colony moves through the water without using fins, tail, or hydrodynamic jets. Truly a wonder of nature!
