Bathers only discover shells, sea glass, pieces of wood and messages in a bottle. However, searching the sand for something other than a dropped candy wrapper can be fun.
Beachcombers who search the sand for other buried treasures are thrilled when fossils wash up on the shore. An interesting activity that combines outdoor time and prehistoric history is fossil collecting.
Instead of searching for a bird of prey in the dry Montana soil, wade into the river to search for these ancient artifacts with a strainer and shovel, or maybe just your bare hands. If you start with preserved shark teeth, the author says fossil hunting can be simple and affordable.
Incredible fossils reminiscent of those in the movie “Jaws” can be found at Calvert Beach in Maryland. On Christmas Day 2022, 9-year-old Molly Sampson made a once-in-a-lifetime discovery while wading in the Chesapeake Bay.
The museum wrote on their Facebook page, “We love seeing and hearing about the gems you find on shore.” They also highlighted their “First Fossil Friday” initiative, which helps people like Molly identify fossils.
